    Description

This listing is for 3 pieces of new precut squares of material
    Three
    pre-cut
    3.75”
    (95mm)
    square
    pieces of
    0.8 mg/cm²
    aluminized polyester known as
Alpha-Film (aka Rad-Film) used as an opaque window material for Alpha Radiation Detection
    . This is
enough material to overlap the edges of a 3" ZnS(Ag) disk or or other scintillator and/or photomultiplier.
It is also often used as a very thin opaque window for low energy gamma, x-ray, and XRF detectors. I have pre-cut 2.75" square pieces available in another listing, and can custom cut sizes to your specifications on request.
There really is only one (reasonably priced) material that will allow the passage of alpha particles while blocking all light, this aluminized polyester material is often referred to as Alpha-Film or Rad-Film.
Alpha-Film is a thin aluminized polyester material used to cover the face of a ZnS(Ag) disk, allowing alpha particles to pass, but keeping light out of the inside of a detector.
The material is used for building an Alpha Radiation Detector when an opaque window is needed over a ZnS(Ag) scintillator.  It can also be used when making a Spinthariscope for viewing Alpha partial
    scintillation
with the eye when an opaque window is
    preferred
    over making a
    darkened
box for the source (the viewing area between the eye and ZnS(Ag) will still need to be enclosed and dark).
It is also often used as a very thin opaque window for low energy gamma, x-ray, and XRF detectors.
    Two or more layers of
    0.8 mg/cm²
Rad-Film should always be used over the ZnS disk to block light from entering the detector, and three layers (
    provided with this listing)
may be necessary for outdoor conditions.
Please see my other listings for other scintillation detector parts and related items.
    PLEASE NOTE:
BECAUSE OF ITS FRAGILITY AND DIFFICULTY WORKING WITH, THERE IS NO RETURN OR REFUND AVAILABLE FOR THE PURCHASE OF ALPHA-FILM. DO NOT ORDER THIS PRODUCT UNLESS YOU AGREE WITH THESE TERMS.
    READ:
This material is VERY difficult to work with, and it is VERY fragile. Additionally, it is impossible to find the material without sporadic microscopic pinholes and/or other defects, so multiple layers must be used to assure light tightness. The use of multiple layers makes it less likely that any two pinholes or defects line up to allow passage of light into the scintillator. I cannot guarantee your success using the film, but provide it with that understanding. This is the primary opaque window material used for making Alpha and ABG detectors, so it is very possible to work with, but careful application is required to successfully use the material. The alpha-film sheets fit stacked over the top of a scintillator and/or PMT, with the ZnS(Ag) on top of the scintillator and/or PMT and each alpha-film sheet overlapping and taped down to the sides.
