On December 10, 1963the CBS News re-ran a month old story about a strange British pop group called the Beatles. The report, while recognizing the Beatles as a "social phenomena" ultimately dismissed them as the latest
"20th century non-hero" with their "non-haircuts" and "non-music".
Undeterred by adult myopia, Maryland teenager Marsha Albert wrote her local radio station asking, "Why can't we have music like this in America?" WWDC disc jockey Carrol James dutifully obtained the latest Beatles' UK single, and on December 17th he gave Marsha the honor of introducing the U.S. radio premier of "I Want To Hold Your Hand."
Capitol records, which had finally agreed to release a Beatles" single in the U.S. after four rejections, ordered Carrol to stop playing the song. He refused and began sending tapes of the song to his Dj friends around the country. Realizing the situation was beyond their control (and great publicity), Capitol rush-released the single on December 26th, 1963. With millions of teenagers home from school during the holidays, the radio saturation caused a frenzy, and Beatlemania was born.
From there, what started out as a carefully planned introduction to American audiences took on a life of its own. Suddenly Beatle wigs, T-shirts, and posters were available everywhere. Three appearances on
The Ed Sullivan Show
, arranged months before, became a national event. New York City Dj Murray The K declared himself the "fifth Beatle" and jammed the airwaves with Beatles songs, their R&B requests, and exclusive interviews. Concerts in Washington, DC and New York City quickly followed, and by the time they returned to England on February 21st, America -and the world-was theirs.
This limited-edition souvenir tape celebrates the 60th anniversary of Beatlemania in America. We've packed this tape with hit after hit of vintage 1964 Beatles, all presented here in their original U.S. versions, which have never been released on Reel to Reel tape before. It’s gear!
