Description
The most beautiful of Russel Wright's myriad of designs, this is "Grass".Manufactured by the Edwin Knowles Company for Mr. Wright.
Only made from 1957 to 1962 and fairly fragile for everyday china, it is now hard to find.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS AUCTION IS FOR THE
CUP AND SAUCER
.
Why am I sure of the date: 1957?
It was my chosen casual dinnerware pattern when I married in that year.
This auction is for one cup and saucer set. Saucer is 6 inches diameter and the set is 2-7/8 inches high.
It really is not fair to say the color is just blue.
It sometimes looks like the aqua that was so popular in midcentury kitchens.
Always luminous, but shaded within the piece.
Mr. Wright designed his dinnerware to leave in the stilt marks from the kiln and occasionally skip a small spot of color, or a tiny deflated bubble of glaze,
or leave a bit of heavier color just to make it look handmade.
Different lighting produces various hues of blue-green.
A matte finish that sometimes shines just a bit. Really a fabulous creation.
The design is a modern art concept of leaves of grass in darker blueish, greenish gray and metallic gold.
This piece is in excellent condition. No chips, cracks, crazing. No utensil marks.
On the bottom there is a gold signature "Russel Wright by Knowles."
