Sesame Street Oscar the Grouch Life Size Motorized Display Can Opens & SpeaksI have collected Sesame Street (mostly vintage) items for many years - literally since the show went on the air in 1969. I actually wrote a letter and visited the set many times in the 1970's, even getting to know Jim Henson, Richard Hunt, Kermit Love and Caroll Spinney. Folks, Sesame Street is my whole life. I knew the day would finally come that I might sell one of my most prized possessions - this Oscar the Grouch, that was an actual display outside of one of the Sesame Street General Stores back in the 1990's. Right now, it is at my home all wrapped up, but here are a few photos when I displayed it downstairs in the event room of my store in Boonton, NJ. I had the entire space decorated in a Sesame Street theme for children's events and book signings. Note the painted doors, fire hydrant (not included). Also, in the next to last photo, you'll see how I displayed it with Sesame Street GUND plush puppets that I sold at the time. Sadly, I am closing the store. This little guy is special to me and will be hard to let go.
This display is hard to find as they were scooped up but another one was actually used at The Library of Performing Arts at Lincoln Center back in 2014 for their Sesame Street 45th Celebration (see very last photo). So, this piece was important enough to Sesame Workshop to represent Oscar the Grouch rather than display an actual puppet used to tape the show, like all the other Muppets were at this exhibit. It is so well made as it needed to stand up to the constant touching and picture taking by visitors to the store back then, and the 45th exhibition.
I was so happy they used it and that I HAD ONE, TOO!
The display was manufactured by VEE Production Services, who also make all the puppets for the Sesame Street Live, On Ice Shows and Sesame Place Theme Parks. They know what they are doing. The Oscar fur, is the real deal! I know, because I was friends with Caroll Spinney, who performed Oscar for 50 years, and he visited my shop on 2 occasions for book signings and he confirmed that. Also, it's HIS VOICE on the audio system that, after Oscar lowers down into his can and the lid closes, make 5 different very "typical Oscar" remarks, like...."Get away from my trash can!" The audio system is great. It can be adjusted, too. I had it on a remote control so I could turn it on when a child went near it. What fun!
I have tried to take photos on the back of the wooden box that the can is permanently attached to with the door open so you can see all the workings of the mechanical display. There is a very nice instructional letter from VEE Productions inside the door that explain the system. Note in one close-up photo, the fur on one of Oscar's hands has a brown spot which is the glue that was used to attach it to the outside of the garbage can. The glued area has really darkened over the years. That can be easily covered with a little bit of fur taken from the fur inside the can. This is very heavy, I estimate 60 - 75 lbs., so only local pick-up.
This is obviously for very serious collectors.
