Our squared oval brushed solid nickel silver (

) plates are the finest quality available for engraving, and are finished with a baked-on synthetic resin, that will not tarnish or rust. The plate is .020" thick, almost that of a dime, so it is sturdy, and will create an elegant finish to your tack trunk.
We quadruple rotary diamond burnish the name into the brass to create a very durable engraving, much more so than just diamond etching or laser engraving, that has a tendency to rub off. The exposed raw nickel silver is then acid oxidized to produce the darkened image.
It comes with two 3/8" nickel plated steel Phillips head screws.
Our nickel silver tags and plates are made of solid nickel silver - no plating is added.
Nickel silver, sometimes called German silver or paktong is a copper alloy with nickel and often zinc. The usual formulation is 60% copper, 20% nickel and 20% zinc. Nickel silver is named for its silvery appearance, but it contains no elemental silver. It is often used as a base metal for silver plating, although we do not plate our nickel silver.
It is an exceptionally durable metal; much more so than brass. It has been used for jewelry, pocket knife bolsters, and musical instruments, most notably the flute, saxophone, trumpet, and French horn. Guitar frets are often made of nickel silver due to its hardness and resistance to corrosion. Many of the metal fittings on modern higher-end equine harness and tack are of nickel silver as are our engraver-quality engraving plates in many styles and sizes.
Due to its hardness and durability, plates and tags made of nickel silver do not need to be as thick as their brass counterparts and keep their finished appearance much longer.
